The Outer Space Treaty, like all international law, is technically binding to those countries who sign up to it, but the obvious lack of 'space police' means that it cannot be practically enforced

  • An existing treaty states that outer space is to be used for 'peaceful purposes'
  • No country can lay claim to celestial territory such as the moon or Mars, it says
  • But treaty has specific failings in the modern era which experts are addressing
  • They include hacking satellites for gain in conflict and taking astronauts hostage
