President Park has just apologized publicly for the third time to the nation, but still refuses to step down. She has however, stated that she will allow the Parliament to decide whether she should stay or be impeached.......

In one of the largest organized marches in the history of the world, tens of millions of Shia Muslims made an incredibly heartening statement, by risking their lives to travel through war-stricken areas to openly defy ISIS. This massive event that would have undoubtedly helped to ease tensions in the West was almost entirely ignored by corporate media.
Women, men, elderly, and children made their way to the city of Karbala on Sunday and Monday last week for the holy day of Arbaeen. Arbaeen is the event which marks the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual that commemorates the death of the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussein in 680 AD........

1,000s of Spaniards march against corporations & austerity


Thousands of people took to the streets of Madrid on Saturday in the latest Dignity March – a protest against the government’s austerity policies.
Participants in Saturday evening’s demonstration walked about two kilometers from Plaza de Espaรฑa to Plaza de Neptuno carrying banners demanding that the government put an end to budget cuts and act independently from Brussels. They also accused their government of protecting the interests of big multinational corporations at the expense of the Spanish people....

Why Italy's constitutional reform referendum could rock the European Union

After the shock Brexit vote and Donald Trump's election as the next President of the United States, the result of Italy's referendum on constitutional reforms could rock the European Union.  Why has the referendum been called?
Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has put his political future on the line by giving Italians a vote on a package of major reforms which include transforming the Senate and reducing its powers.

Currently, the country's parliament is composed of the Senate of the Republic and Chamber of Deputies - Italy's equivalent of the House of Lords and Commons respectively. Both chambers have an equal number of 315 members each, which can lead to political deadlocks. It is hoped the reforms will make passing legislation easier, however opponents argue that it could give the governing party too much power........



Right-wing v Green: Austria voting for president for 2nd time in 6 months  

Presidential election is being held in Austria, after results of the May voting were annulled. The European nation is once again choosing between the former Green Party leader Alexander Van der Bellen and Norbert Hofer, who is running for the right-wing Freedom Party (FPO). The rerun vote was ordered by Austria's Constitutional Court after the previous presidential election, held on May 22, was disputed following complaints of irregularities. The initial election saw the former Greens’ leader, Van der Bellen win with 50.3 percent of the vote, compared to Hofer’s 49.7 percent, with only 31,000 votes separating the candidates.........

Indonesia blasphemy protest swells to crowd of 200,000

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — At least 200,000 conservative Muslims rallied in the Indonesian capital on Friday in the second major protest in a month against its minority Christian governor who is being prosecuted for alleged blasphemy.

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who is a political ally of the Jakarta governor, Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama, and angered hard-liners by being out of the city during the first protest, unexpectedly went to the national monument to join Friday prayers with the sprawling crowd. He called for protesters to disperse peacefully. They cheered and then broke into chants calling for Ahok's arrest, but later people were streaming peacefully out of the area into a main thoroughfare of the city........

US military veterans continue to arrive at Standing Rock, with up to 3,500 expected in total. They are due to meet with tribal elders to discuss how they can best help the ongoing protest, marked by heavy police force and bitterly cold weather conditions.
Members of “Veterans Stand for Standing Rock,” who have been told to bring supplies such as gas masks, earplugs and body armor (but no drugs, alcohol or weapons), plan to form a human shield around protesters to protect them against rubber bullets and the police.......


Denmark: Clashes erupt as counter-demo meets PEGIDA protest in Copenhagen

Clashes over immigration have erupted between police and two opposing protest groups in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, and resulted in the arrests of 11 people, local media reports.
The street demonstration by the group “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West,” or PEGIDA, took place simultaneously with a counter-rally.
Pro-immigration protesters barricaded themselves against police. They set ablaze containers with litter and pieces of wood and lit a bonfire right on the roadway, which ended up in scuffles with police.........
