I went to a counter-serve restaurant recently, and when the time came to pay for my order, took out my wallet, presented a $20 bill, and was told, “Sorry, we don’t accept cash.” I was flabbergasted. What happened to “legal tender for all debts public and private,” as it says right there on the bill?
This has now happened to me at three separate establishments in recent months. The rise of cashless establishments is happening amid continuing hype over the supposed dawn of a “cashless future” and agitation by some very powerful interests that would love to see cash disappear. The credit card companies love it, naturally, and tech industry associations have also pushed for the concept.
Meanwhile, a backlash has prompted several cities and states including San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New Jersey to ban cashless stores (they’ve also been banned in Massachusetts since 1978). One salad chain, Sweetgreen, reversed its decision to go cashless amid criticism, and Amazon, which had reportedly been opposing legislative bans, has since announced that it will accept cash at its automated, cashier-less convenience stores. (As for the “legal tender” statement, that does not actually mandate the acceptance of cash for payment.)
It is great to see this pushback against the supposed cashless future because this is a trend that should very much be nipped in the bud. There are several reasons why cashless stores, and a cashless society more broadly, are a bad idea. Such stores are:

- Bad for privacy. When you pay cash, there is no middleman; you pay, you receive goods or services — end of story. When a middleman becomes part of the transaction, that middleman often gets to learn about the transaction — and under our weak privacy laws, has a lot of leeway to use that information as it sees fit. (Cash transactions of more than $10,000 must be reported to the government, however.) More on privacy and payment systems in a follow-up post.
- Bad for low-income communities. Participation in a cashless society presumes a level of financial stability and enmeshment in bureaucratic financial systems that many people simply do not possess. Opening a bank account requires an ID, which many poor and elderly people lack, as well as other documents such as a utility bill or other proof of address, which the homeless lack, and which generally create bureaucratic barriers to participating in electronic payment networks. Banks also charge fees that can be significant for people living on the economic margins. According to government data from 2017, about one in 15 U.S. households (6.5%) were “unbanked” (had no checking or savings account), while almost one in five (18.7%) were “underbanked” (had a bank account but resorted to using money orders, check cashing, or payday loans). Finally, because merchants usually pass along the cost of credit card fees to all their customers through their prices, the current credit card system effectively serves to transfer money from poor households to high-income households, according to a study by the Federal Reserve.
- Bad for people of color. The burden of lack of access to banking services such as credit cards does not fall equally. While 84% of white people in 2017 were what the Federal Reserve calls“fully banked,” only 52% of Black and 63% of Hispanic people were.

In 2015 I called on you all in regard to the Hadron Collider. Four years later I must call on you again, this time to save the Amazon Rain Forest which is being deliberately burnt down.
Will you please find time for a 3 minute meditation on Thursday 29th August at 10pm British Summer Time. Will you please meditate positive and loving energy to get these fires under control.
We used 3 minutes on the Hadron collider so do not think that 3 minute is pointless, I do not expect any negative interference in the meditation on this occasion.

🙏 ~ Karma-Sanskara-Vasanas (Verdensalt Arkiv) ~ | Blogger: PS: (uddrag) -- Min egen kommentar: Sagt på en mere jordnær måde. De fleste ønsker udvikling, mens de færreste ønsker forandring. Forandring er en forudsætning for udvikling, men hele vores selvplejende psykologi er bygget op på, at fastholde os med faste rutiner, stabile forestillinger om os selv (selvbillede) samt en kultur omkring os, der ikke ændrer sig for hurtigt. Uden en rigtig god grund til, at forandre dig, vil det aldrig ske, men nogen gange stikker livet os en lussing, der gør, at vi ikke kan lade være med at forandre os. Ego-kammerets forsvarsmur nedbrydes og universet skaber forandringen i vor DNA. Måske ved du, at du er havnet i den forkerte relation – arbejdsmæssigt eller privat – men at det er svært, at finde modet til at gennemføre den nødvendige forandring. Vi skal nu bryde ud af vores fastforankret tankemønstre og vaner for at se lyset forenden af tunnelen, derfor, skal der handles og nedbrydes... |

I livet har vi uendelige mange valg at træffe hver dag; fra de simpleste ting som, "hvad skal jeg have på i dag" til komplekse valg som, "hvad skal jeg være, når jeg bliver stor?" Vi tror, at vi frit træffer valget. Men i virkeligheden er det modsatte ofte tilfældet. Vi har mellem 60.000 - 80.000 tanker om dagen. De fleste af de disse tanker er samme tanker, vi havde dagen før og dagen før den.
Det samme gælder for de valg, vi træffer. Vi tror måske, at vi frit vælger mellem forskellige muligheder, men vi gentager ofte bare det samme valg, om og om igen. Ayurveda har en forklaring på dette.
Ifølge Ayurveda, de valg du foretager, er baseret på dine tidligere handlinger, som har skabt dine minder og ønsker samt afstedkommer dine fremtidige handlinger. Derfor kan man sige, vi går soverende gennem meget af vores liv.
Se det på denne måde; Karma (handling) - Sanskara (hukommelse) - Vasanas (begær). Dette er svinghjulet af Karma. Ifølge buddhismen binder det os til, at vende tilbage til en menneskelig inkarnation igen og igen. Men for nu, lad os fokusere på de "små ting" Hvis du er tilfreds, og ikke kan få nok af dit liv - er det jo bare fantastisk! Mange mennesker, har det dog ikke sådanne. De føler tomhed, tristhed, frustreret og de ved ikke, hvorfor eller hvad de skal gøre ved det. Sommetider har de en ide om, hvad problemet er, eller godt klar over, de tager usunde valg, men er ikke i stand til at stoppe.
Lad os bryde Karmaens svinghjulet i mindre dele og se hvordan det virker. Det kan lade sig gøre med alle tre dele. Lad os starte med handling eller Karma.
Som eksempel bruger vi en person, der gør noget, som de ved ikke er godt for dem, men de føler sig ude af stand til at stoppe; Lad os sige de ryger. Her starter selve 'handlingen', personen vågner op om morgenen og tager sig en cigaret. Her kommer selve 'handling' eller 'Karma'ind - at ryge en cigaret. Lidt senere på dagen 'husker' personen (sanakara) hvor skønt og afslappende det føles, at ryge den cigaret. Dette fører til et 'trangen/begæret' (vasanas) at få en anden cigaret. Personen afslutter den anden cigaret og straks føler anger og siger til dem selv, at de skal holde op. Senere på dagen, har stress ophobet sig fra jobbet. Så kommer kaffepausen, straks huskes den afslappende følelse cigaretten gav dem (sanakara). Du kan sikkert gætte, hvad der sker. Vores cyklus fortsætter - Karma-Sanakara-Vasanas.
