NEW DATA SUGGESTS that the safety threshold for PFOA in drinking water should be as low as .1 parts per trillion, according to the nation’s top toxicologist. Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, cited the figure, which is 700 times lower than the safety level set by the Environmental Protection Agency, at a conference on PFAS at Northeastern University last week.

While PFOA has already been tied to kidney and testicular cancer, among other diseases, recent research linking PFOA exposure to pancreatic cancer is the basis for the lower number cited by Birnbaum. The research was done by the National Toxicology Program, which is a division of the NIEHS.

“If you look at the data, pancreatic tumors are present at very, very low concentrations from PFOA,” Birnbaum told the audience at the conference. “If you use the pancreatic tumors in the rats in the NTP study to calculate what would really be a virtually safe dose, you’re getting down at about .1 ppt. Well, that’s really low. And that’s only for one PFAS.” Birnbaum suggested that regulators might ultimately issue one drinking water standard for the entire class, which contains thousands of compounds.

About the EPA’s current water standard, Birnbaum said, “Many of us would think that is not health protective.”

Pia Klemp, a 35 year old German boat captain, is facing up to 20 years in prison for rescuing refugees who were drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. Klemp is accused by authorities in Italy, for “assisting in illegal immigration,” and if convicted, she will serve her sentence in an Italian prison.

Klemp works with a charity called Sea-Watch that conducts rescue missions for people who are stranded in the Mediterranean Sea. The vast majority of the people who are rescued in these missions are refugees coming from Africa and the Middle East.

However, the charges against her claim that she coordinated with smugglers to collect migrants at rendezvous points, and that the “rescue” missions were just a deception to avoid legal charges, for what was actually an elaborate smuggling operation.

Klemp denies the charges against her and insists that her actions to save people from distress were totally legal according to international law.

Ja, »Den Korte Radioavis« gik over stregen, da der i programmet blev sat navn på en ukendt DSUer. Men reaktionerne fra kommentatorer og politikere viser en foruroligende tendens til, at politikere kræver at blive behandlet med en særlig respekt som om de tilhører en ophøjet kaste. Det er tydeligt, at mange ikke forstår, at satire ikke er for sjov.

Var det en fejl at nævne navnet på en ukendt DSUer i satireprogrammet »Den Korte Radioavis«? Ja, det var det, og det har Radio24syv beklaget.
Fejltrinnet fandt sted i en udsendelse, der satiriserede over, hvor sladdervorn den danske presse er, og især pressen på Christiansborg. I programmet høres de to hovedpersoner, nyhedsredaktøren Rasmus Bruun og seniorkorrespondenten, Kirsten Birgit Schiøtz Kretz Hørsholm, udveksle saftig gangsladder fra Borgen. De taler blandt andet om, hvorfor Socialdemokratiets Henrik Sass Larsen mon ikke var til stede på valgnatten, og det var her, der blev sat navn på DSUeren. Det skulle ikke være sket, for vedkommende er ikke kendt i offentligheden og bærer heller ikke gyldne kæder.
