Ten thousand Hawaii residents have been ordered to evacuate their homes after the Big Island’s Kilauea volcano erupted and began spewing lava and deadly gases into the air.
The eruption was accompanied by a 5.0 magnitude earthquake, followed by hundreds of smaller tremors
Warning sirens sounded across the Big Island at 4.30pm on Thursday as Hawaii County Civil Defense urged residents of Leilani Estates, in Puna, to flee the approaching lava streams.
A 492ft fissure opened in the ground with lava flowing from it for around two hours, officials said, with magma a few feet before stopping. Geologists warned the eruption is still ongoing.
Residents of Duson, LA are being evacuated from a huge five-mile-radius of a chemical plant which exploded into flames and is burning since about 6:45 PM EDT Thursday.
The flames and smoke are so intense that Louisiana State Police have had to close Interstate 10 in both directions near the plant.
Acadia Parish Sheriff K.P. Gibson said I-10 westbound and eastbound is closed near the Duson exit. Traffic is being diverted to I-49.
Louisiana State Police Hazmat has ordered a five-mile radius evacuation around the fire.
I-10 East is now closed at Crowley. Motorists are being diverted to LA-13.
Local TV stations are reporting that the fire happened at Flow-Chem Technologies, "a specialty oilfield chemical provider that operates across the Gulf of Mexico and US onshore markets with blending facilities located at Rayne, Louisiana and Pleasanton, Texas in the U.S. and multiple warehouses."

President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Russian Geographical Society (RGO) to create a new atlas of the world under the guidence of the Russian Defense Ministry. “With the most active participation of the RGO, it is proposed to prepare a new geographical atlas of the world … I ask the experts of the Russian Geographical Society, with the participation of the Defense Ministry,” Putin said on Friday at a meeting of the Russian Geographical Society’s Board of Trustees.
He noted that the Ministry of Defense should ensure the availability of its cartographic materials for the compilers of the atlas, as well as for travelers, tourists, motorists, including “in the format of modern computer technologies”, online.
According to Putin, Russia is not going to “impose anything on anyone”, but it is not ready to condone the distortion of historical geographic data, which, in his opinion, is largely due to the lack of modern Russian maps in the public domain.
Earlier at the meeting, Putin said that Russian-language toponyms were unfairly removed from the world map. According to the president, this is especially noticeable in Antarctica, where some place names given by the discoverers of the continent, Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, almost ceased to exist.
The head of state noted that today only a few people know that the original historical name of Smith Island in Antarctica is Borodino, that Snow Island is originally Maloyaroslavets, and Livingston is actually Smolensk.
The President stressed that in 2020 the anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica, made possible by Russian seafarers, will be celebrated.
