(Stillness in the Storm Editor) Today, Donald Trump signed Presidential Executive Order on Enforcing Federal Law with Respect to Transnational Criminal Organizations and Preventing International Trafficking.  

News outlets are saying the move was in preparation for an operation focused on illegal immigration. But the language used can also be applied to almost any type of criminal activity, including the machinations of the so-called Cabal or shadow government, particularly in relation to child-sex human trafficking rings.

Some contend that Trump is the savior of humanity, working for the forces of freedom. Others say Trump is a neo-Hitler who is working hand-in-glove with insidious criminal syndicates that influence geopolitical affairs from behind the scenes. At this stage, it is unclear which point of view is the right one.

However, the powers invoked within one of the Executive Orders signed by Trump suggest he could, in fact, be preparing to take a stand against criminal elements embedded within the political apparatus of the United States.

In particular, the following excerpt specifically references human trafficking.

Sec. 2. Policy. It shall be the policy of the executive branch to:

(a) strengthen enforcement of Federal law in order to thwart transnational criminal organizations and subsidiary organizations, including criminal gangs, cartels, racketeering organizations, and other groups engaged in illicit activities that present a threat to public safety and national security and that are related to, for example:

(i) the illegal smuggling and trafficking of humans, drugs or other substances, wildlife, and weapons;
(ii) corruption, cybercrime, fraud, financial crimes, and intellectual-property theft; or
(iii) the illegal concealment or transfer of proceeds derived from such illicit activities.

(b) ensure that Federal law enforcement agencies give a high priority and devote sufficient resources to efforts to identify, interdict, disrupt, and dismantle transnational criminal organizations and subsidiary organizations, including through the investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of members of such organizations, the extradition of members of such organizations to face justice in the United States and, where appropriate and to the extent permitted by law, the swift removal from the United States of foreign nationals who are members of such organizations; (Source)

In February 1975, a group of geneticists gathered in a tiny town on the central coast of California to decide if their work would bring about the end of the world. So, they descended on a coastal retreat called Asilomar, a name that became synonymous with the guidelines they laid down at this meeting—a strict ethical framework meant to ensure that biotechnology didn’t unleash the apocalypse.

Forty-two years on, another group of scientists gathered at Asilomar to consider a similar problem. But this time, the threat wasn’t biological. It was digital. In January, the world’s top artificial intelligence researchers walked down the same beachside paths as they discussed their rapidly accelerating field and the role it will play in the fate of humanity. It was a private conference—the enormity of the subject deserves some privacy—but in recent days, organizers released several videos from the conference talks, and some participants have been willing to discuss their experience, shedding some light on the way AI researchers view the threat of their own field.

The rise of driverless cars and trucks is just a start. It’s not just blue-collar jobs that AI endangers.

Yes, they discussed the possibility of a superintelligence that could somehow escape human control, and at the end of the month, the conference organizers unveiled a set of guidelines, signed by attendees and other AI luminaries, that aim to prevent this possible dystopia. But the researchers at Asilomar were also concerned with more immediate matters: the effect of AI on the economy.

“One of the reasons I don’t like the discussions about superintelligence is that they’re a distraction from what’s real,” says Oren Etzioni, CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, who attended the conference. “As the poet said, have fewer imaginary problems and more real ones.”

At a time when the Trump administration is promising to make America great again by restoring old-school manufacturing jobs, AI researchers aren’t taking him too seriously. They know that these jobs are never coming back, thanks in no small part to their own research, which will eliminate so many other kinds of jobs in the years to come, as well. At Asilomar, they looked at the real US economy, the real reasons for the “hollowing out” of the middle class. The problem isn’t immigration—far from it. The problem isn’t offshoring or taxes or regulation. It’s technology.

Bad news if you’re looking to ditch this planet for another one far, far away. According to new research from NASA, planets in the habitable zone in red dwarf star systems—including much-hyped exoplanet Proxima b—might lose too much oxygen to support liquid water, and therefore, life. Goddammit.

Traditionally, scientists have tried to determine habitable zones based on the amount of heat and light the host star gives off. But this new research takes stellar eruptions and the rate of a atmospheric oxygen loss into account to build a more refined picture of where in a star system Earth-like planets may lie. The team developed a model to investigate how the high-energy X-rays and ultraviolet emissions that red dwarfs spew off cause oxygen in habitable zone planet atmospheres to escape into space. This “astmospheric erosion” could spell bad news for fans of Proxima B, the exoplanet located in the red dwarf star system Proxima Centauri less than five light years away. The researchers’ new findings were published on February 6th in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

“The more X-ray and extreme ultraviolet energy there is, the more electrons are generated and the stronger the ion escape effect becomes,” Alex Glocer, a Goddard astrophysicist and co-author of the paper, said in a press release. “This effect is very sensitive to the amount of energy the star emits, which means it must play a strong role in determining what is and is not a habitable planet.”

You could also start aligning with your inner truth and be sceptical and less fearsome, to get a hold on truth..
