Wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest have also hit a record high number this year.

The Brazilian state of Amazonas has declared an emergency in the south of the state and in its capital Manaus over the blazes. Images have also shown the northernmost state of Roraima covered in dark smoke. Acre, on the border with Peru, has been on environmental alert since Friday, August 16th.

On Monday, 19th August, the city of Sao Paulo went dark. The smoke has traveled from the fires blazing in the Brazilian states of Rondรดnia and Amazonas and blackened the sky above the city for about an hour.
