The EU's Copyright Directive will be voted on in the week of March 25 (our sources suggest the vote will take place on March 27th, but that could change); the Directive has been controversial all along, but it took a turn for the catastrophic during the late stages of the negotiation, which yielded a final text that is alarming in its potential consequences for all internet activity in Europe and around the world.
More than 5,000,000 Europeans have signed a petition against Article 13 of the Directive, and there has been outcry from eminent technical experts, the United Nations' special rapporteur on free expression, and many other quarters.
Now, a coalition of more than 130 EU businesses have entered the fray, led by file storage service NextCloud. Their letter to the European Parliament calls Article 13—which will lead to mass adoption of copyright filters for online services that will monitor and block user-submitted text, audio, video and images—a "dangerous experiment with the core foundation of the Internet’s ecosystem." They also condemn Article 11, which will allow news publishers to decide who can quote and link to news stories and charge for the right to do so.
Importantly, they identify a key risk of the Directive, which is that it will end up advantaging US Big Tech firms that can afford monitoring duties, and that will collect "massive amounts of data" sent by Europeans.
March 21st is an EU-wide day of action on the Copyright Directive, with large site blackouts planned (including German Wikipedia), and on March 23, there will be mass demonstrations across the EU. Things are getting down to the wire here, folks.

According to this new story from Spaceweather, an Earth-directed solar flare has been cast into space by the Sun that is expected to impact our planet Earth sometime on March 22nd or 23rd. And while they report the explosion upon the Sun that hurled a coronal mass ejection into space is not headed directly towards the Earth and will likely only deliver our planet a glancing blow, this new C4-class flare from sunspot AR2736 is another reminder of just how vulnerable our planet Earth is to 'doom from the sun', especially in 2019.
As this March 18th story over at Zero Hedge reports, a new study titled "Multiradionuclide evidence for an extreme solar proton event around 2,610 B.P. (∼660 BC)" which had been published online on March 11th in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" warns a devastating solar storm striking the Earth once again is a matter of 'when', and not 'if', while warning such a storm will be sure to cause absolute havoc all across the planet.
Comparing what is likely to nail us at some point in the future to the huge solar storm that blasted the planet 2,600 years ago, (though causing little damage), their study warned that such an event in 2019 "would trigger widespread power outages and collapse communication and navigation systems. In short, modern society would come to a screeching halt".
And while the report gives no exact date for when such an event might once again occur, it ends by warning "the next severe solar storm could be imminent and threaten modern society" while also emphasizing the differences in our world today between the modern tech we have in 2019 and the 'Carrington Event' of 1859 that knocked out telegraph circuits around the world: "If those solar storm(s) had occurred today, (they) could have had severe effects on our high-tech society."

Peter C. Gøtzsche, MD is a Danish medical researcher, and leader of the Nordic Cochrane Center at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has written numerous reviews within the Cochrane collaboration.
Dr.Gøtzsche has been critical of screening for breast cancer using mammography, arguing that it cannot be justified; His critique stems from a meta-analysis he did on mammography screening studies and published as Is screening for breast cancer with mammography justifiable? in The Lancet in 2000. In it he discarded 6 out of 8 studies arguing their randomization was inadequate.
In 2006 a paper by Gøtzsche on mammography screening was electronically published in the European Journal of Cancer ahead of print. The journal later removed the paper completely from the journal website without any formal retraction. The paper was later published in Danish Medical Bulletin with a short note from the editor, and Gøtzsche and his coauthors commented on the unilateral retraction that the authors were not involved in.
