AFP | ~ Home News UN chief concerned nuclear 'coffin' leaking in Pacific ~ | Blogger: [☢️Since 70's - Here's Concealed Nuclear Waste From 43 Atomic Bombs😨] ..Nomore hiding - concrete cracks and black water has been seen along the water edges. The island is called Runit Island, and the problem lies under a huge, round concrete cover. According to a report from the US authorities, a total of 73,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste is under the cover - including 437 high-plutonium plastic bags from failed test blasts. The most stable are Pu-244, with a half-life of 80.8 million years, Pu-242, with a half-life of 373,300 years, and Pu-239, with a half-life of 24,110 years. All of the remaining radioactive isotopes have half-lives that are less than 7,000 years. Yet, the Americans placed the radioactive waste in an old crater from a previous nuclear test without casting a foundation first. THAT was in 1979. At that time, the plan was to find a more permanent and environmentally friendly solution - but over time it turned out that the Americans apparently believed that the 110-meter-wide and 45-centimeter thick concrete shield was good enough. But now UN Secretary-General António Guterre expresses concern that the old nuclear waste can be a lurid environmental disaster... |
