Indonesia earthquake




Indonesia was struck by a major 7.5 magnitude earthquake today, which triggered a tsunami hours after a series of tremors brought down houses on the island of Sulawesi.

Waves of up to two metres (6.5ft) smashed into the city of Palu after the major quake struck offshore on Friday, collapsing buildings and washing a ship ashore.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning following the powerful 7.5 magnitude quake but lifted the alert before the waves hit.

Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroh said the tsunami swept away homes and entire families are reported missing.

The quake hit just after 10 AM UTC (6pm local time) as dusk fell.

Communications were down and the airport closed, hampering rescue efforts and making it impossible to assess the damage to life and property, officials said.



There has been no word on casualties, officials said.

Authorities have asked people in the affected area to remain on the alert as a number of moderate aftershocks hit. Officials have warned of more damage to come.

Hurricane Rosa
Hurricane Rosa grew overnight into a powerful Category 4 storm off Mexico's Pacific Coast, and is set to hit Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah when it makes landfall on the US western coast on Tuesday according to the latest path tracker.Maximum sustained winds are 145 mph.

High wind gusts of this speed can fell trees and down power lines, as well as cause power outages and property damage. Heavy rainfall could also see widespread flooding, as was the case with Hurricane Florence when it hit the Carolina coast.

AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Pydynowski said: “The track of Rosa will keep it well west of Mexico through the weekend, meaning the primary impact to land through the weekend will be limited to rough surf and rip currents along the western coast of Mexico.

“Regardless of its exact intensity as it approaches the Baja, moisture from Rosa will be pulled northward and northeastward across northern Mexico and into the southwestern United States.
